Seniors and Health Insurance Exchange

Beginning July 1, 2010

Medicare enrollees receive a one-time check of $250 to help cover prescription medication costs once they reach the coverage gap(aka donut hole). Checks will be sent directly from Medicare, under the Department of Health and Human Services.

  • Medicare cannot charge a co-payment for preventive services; Preventive services include an annual wellness visit that provides personalized prevention plan services, including a health risk assessment, available under Medicare.
  • Drug manufacturers are required to provide a 50% discount to Part D for brand-name drugs.

  • The coverage gap (aka donut hole) in Medicare's prescription drug plan closes.

In addition, a voluntary insurance program, known as CLASS, will help to pay for long-term care and support at home.
