Delaware Council on Health Promotion
and Disease Prevention (CHPDP)
On May 20, 2010, Delaware Governor Jack Markell issued Executive Order 19 creating a Council on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. The Council is charged "to advise the Governor and Executive Branch state agencies on the development and coordination of strategies, policies, programs and other actions statewide to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent chronic and lifestyle-related disease."
The executive order calls for an assessment of the burden of lifestyle-related diseases in Delaware, a review of current recommendations and activities within state agencies and other organizations, and development of an "overarching statewide strategy" for promoting healthy lifestyles. Gov. Jack Markell appointed Dr. Sandra Hassink, director of the Nemours Childhood Obesity Initiative at the A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children, as Council chair. The Council includes cabinet secretaries, leaders of health organizations, legislators, and health professionals; and is staffed by the Division of Public Health. The Council began meeting in January of 2011, and issued it's first set of recommendations to Gov. Markell in December 2011.
Meetings are open to the public, and public testimony may be submitted prior to each meeting.
