PREFACE

       I am pleased to present the 2004 Vital Statistics Report, issued by 
the Division of Public Health's Delaware Health Statistics Center.

       This report features statistics that are essential to identify and 
understand the challenges facing Delaware as it strives to improve the health 
of its residents.  Our challenges are significant, and include the reduction 
of infant mortality, lowering our high rates of cancer, and closing the health 
disparities gap that exists when we compare racial and ethnic groups.  
In order to meet these challenges, we must gain insight from, and track our 
progress through, health indicators.  The Delaware Vital Statistics Annual 
Report is a key report issued by the Division of Public Health for this purpose.

       To assist users of this report, an introductory section describes 
Delaware's vital statistics system and defines terms used in the report.  
In addition, we can provide all data, tables, and graphs in Microsoft Excel 
spreadsheets, or the entire report in electronic format.  To make such requests, 
or to ask questions about the report in general, please contact the Delaware

       The primary sources of data used in preparing this report are certificates 
of marriage, divorce, live birth, death, fetal death, and reports of induced 
termination of pregnancy.  We are indebted to the hard work and dedication of the
