National Public Health Performance Standards Program
The National Public Health Performance Standards (NPHPS) Program is a partnership initiative that has developed performance standards for state and local public health systems and for public health governing bodies. The vision, mission and goals are listed below.

To improve the quality of public health practice and performance of public health systems.
GOALS:
- Provide performance standards for public health systems and encouraging their widespread use;
- Encourage and leverage national, state and local partnerships to build a stronger foundation for public health preparedness;
- Promote continuous quality improvement of public health systems;
- Strengthen the science base for public health practice improvement.
The Delaware Initiative
The Division of Public Health is preparing to lead the initiative in Delaware. We will be inviting public health partners to join with us to assess how well the public health system in Delaware delivers essential public health services. The public health system can be described as a network of public, private and volunteer partners with differing roles, relationships and interactions that contribute to the public's health and well being.
We will be using a tested assessment instrument that was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other public health affiliates. There are 10 essential public health services that we will assess. We plan to do one assessment per month starting with a pilot in February, 2006.
We will be sending out press releases to inform our public health partners of the initiative. Check the Assessment Meetings and Summaries page for the results of those meetings .
