NEMOURS HEALTH AND PREVENTION SERVICES AND DELAWARE'S DIVISION OF PUBLIC HEALTHPRESENT JULY 22 HEALTH FAIR AT DELAWARE STATE FAIR
Learn how to live a healthy and long life July 22 at the Nemours Health and Prevention Services Healthy Kids Day Health Fair. The annual event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the fairgrounds in Harrington, in the Delaware Electric Cooperative's free entertainment tent. The tent is located near the Midway entrance.
With 23 vendors coordinated by the Delaware Division of Public Health, this event covers disease prevention, immunizations, cancer prevention and early detection, injury prevention and other topics. Physical activity and nutrition headline the 2008 health fair.
Highlights of this event include special guests. Original members of the Titans football team (they inspired Disney's "Remember the Titans" movie) will visit at 9:30 a.m. and offer a 10:00 a.m. autograph session; Miss Delaware, who will visit at noon, and Grover from Sesame Street will appear at 1:30 p.m. There will also be cup stacking demonstrations at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Nemours Health and Prevention Services is promoting its "5-2-1 and Almost None" campaign, which promotes healthy living practices. Nutrition, physical activity, general wellness and injury prevention themes will be promoted by Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, Bayhealth Medical Center, Beebe Medical Center, Nanticoke Health Services, the Division of Child Mental Health Services, Delaware Covering Kids & Families, and Delaware Curative Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation.
Librarians at the Delaware Academy of Medicine's table await visitors health-related questions. Parents can receive free information from the Child Development Watch program to recognize important childhood developmental stages, to avoid delays in learning and motor skill development. The Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence will provide information to support all people living without fear in their homes and communities.
Visitors will receive giveaways and complimentary information about immunizations, safe drinking water, preventing lead exposure, having healthy homes, and the necessity of safe food and beverages. The Office of Public Safety will show adults how to correctly use booster seats. While their chaperones browse, kids can play musical chairs or enjoy the speed cup stacking demonstration.
Access to this event is included in the Fair's regular gate admission fee of $6 (or online for $5). School-aged children (including college students) are admitted free on July 22. Gate hours are July 17, 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.; and July 18 through July 26, 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. For information about the Delaware State Fair's other events, please visit at www.delawarestatefair.com.
