FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MAY 11 - 17 IS WOMEN'S HEALTH WEEK IN DELAWARE
The Delaware Division of Public Health's (DPH) Office of Women's Health (OWH) is pleased to announce that May 11 - 17 has been officially declared Women's Health Week in Delaware by Governor Ruth Ann Minner.
Women's Health Week is a celebration of women taking responsibility for their own health through greater knowledge and understanding, and a celebration of the efforts that national, state, and community organizations do in their work with partners and volunteers to improve awareness of key women's health issues.
Women make up over half of Delaware's population. The mission of the Office of Women's Health is to raise awareness so that women and girls can achieve the optimal in health and wellness throughout their lives. Through health news, services, events and resources offered by DPH and partners within the state community, this office provides a link between women and services they may otherwise not be aware of. It also encourages and assists in building links among professionals in women's health field.
"By embracing a wellness-prevention approach, the Office of Women's Health will be an advocate for improving women's health across the lifespan", said State Medical Director Herman Ellis, MD, MPH, FACPM.
For example, the OWH will sponsor an Obesity Conference at the Delaware State University in Dover on June 17th from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., which will address the latest findings in weight control, obesity and overweight issues among women. This all-day symposium is free, said Clinical Medical Director and OWH Director Jacqueline J. Christman, MD, MBA, MS (Epidemiology). Interested person(s) should contact OWH@state.de.us for more information about this conference, or may call OWH at (302) 744-4702.
To connect women to important health news and resources, OWH created an electronic newsletter. Over 300 subscribers enjoyed the first issue, with more people and groups being added daily to the mailing list. To subscribe, simply e-mail owh@state.de.us and ask for the newsletter.
