What is Healthy Choices, Healthy Lifestyles?

Healthy Choices, Healthy Lifestyles is a statewide education campaign designed to prevent the growing rate of childhood and adult obesity that is occurring in Delaware and the United States.

There is a prediction that about one third of children born in 2000 or later could eventually suffer from diabetes. More African Americans, Hispanics, and American Indians are affected by obesity and diabetes. Hispanic children are at a greater risk of becoming obese at any stage of development, and African American females are more susceptible to becoming obese. Obesity can cause or aggravate many chronic health problems—such as heart disease, asthma, high blood pressure, and cancer.

This is a call to action for all Delawareans to be healthier.

Why is eating healthy and living healthy important?

Eating healthy helps maintain the body and its functions; healthy foods keep the body active and running. Eating unhealthy, like chips and lots of sugar-sweetened beverages, decreases the overall health of one’s well being. Eating healthy and being active will decrease the chances of many health problems in the future. National programs such as Let’s Move! and America On the Move can help with making children more active.

How can I make Healthy Choices, and have a Healthy Lifestyle?

There are many ways! Drinking less soda and more water is one option. Eating more fruits and vegetables is another choice. Parents should limit the amount of junk food their children consume daily. To live a healthy lifestyle, parents should involve children in physical activities that are offered after school like basketball and baseball. Parents can also work with their schools to make sure that after-school programs include physical activity.
