The Division of Public Health recommends the tips on healthy eating in Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010, a publication of the U.S. Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and Human Services. There is strong scientific evidence that these recommendations can help people achieve a healthy weight, reduce risk of chronic illnesses, and promote overall wellness. To help consumers follow the guidelines, USDA has developed a web site called ChooseMyPlate, with useful tips, recipes, menus, and advice for healthy eating.
Today, two of five (40 percent) children and two-thirds of adults in Delaware are either overweight or obese. Poor nutrition can affect the health of children, as well as adults. Weight-related diseases (such as diabetes and heart disease) formerly identified primarily in adults are now being observed in children and adolescents with excess body fat.
Let’s Move! is an initiative launched by former First Lady Michelle Obama. It is dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity. The initiative combines tested strategies with common sense approaches for guiding our children on a path to a healthier future.
The Let’s Move Child Care initiative was launched in June 2011. Let's Move Child Care is a partnership with the Nemours Foundation, Healthy Kids Healthy Future, the National Association of Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies, Zero to Three, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children. It features the work of Delaware’s child care providers and shines a national spotlight on the great work that is being done to make a difference in the lives of young children.
