Baby Boomers and their Kids Have a Big Effect on Delaware's Population Projections

The Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities (DSAAPD) website has been updated with the latest population projections for the older population in Delaware. Check out the Demographic Information page to see projections for Delaware, New Castle, Kent, and Sussex Counties, Wilmington, Dover, and Newark. You might find it interesting that, for the first time, the Delaware Population Consortium has projected the State’s population to the year 2050. Know anyone born in 1990? That person will be 60 years old in 2050. At that time, we will be in the thick of the baby boomlet surge in which kids of baby boomers will be entering their older years. And speaking of baby boomers, we have already seen 10 years of baby boomers (those born between 1946 and 1956) join the ranks of Delaware’s 60+ population, with 7 more years of boomers (people born between 1957 and 1964) yet to come. By 2024, all of the baby boomers will have entered their older years. The oldest baby boomers turned 70 in 2016, and by 2031 they will reach age the 85+ group, sometimes considered the “oldest old” and those most likely to need long term care services.
