The cause of these illnesses is unknown and is\n\n\n  being investigated. Up-to-date information and CDC guidance documents with respect to SARS can be found at:\n\n\n  http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncidod\/sars. Listed below are interim biosafety guidelines for handling SARS specimens:\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<ol>\n\n\n  <li>The following activities may be performed in Biosafety Level (BSL) 2 facilities using BSL-2 practices as described in the CDC\/NIH\n\n\n  Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories manual &#8211; full text available at: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/od\/ohs\/biosfty\/bmbl4\/bmbl4toc.htm\">http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/od\/ohs\/biosfty\/bmbl4\/bmbl4toc.htm<\/a>\n\n\n    <ol class=\"lower-alpha\">\n\n\n      <li>Pathologic examination and processing of formalin-fixed or otherwise inactivated tissues.\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n      <li>Molecular analysis of extracted nucleic acid preparations.\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n      <li>Electron microscopic studies with glurataldehyde-fixed grids.\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n      <li>Final packaging of specimens for transport to diagnostic laboratories for additional testing. Specimens should already be in a\n\n\n      sealed, decontaminated primary container.\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n    <\/ol>\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>The following activities may be performed in BSL-2 facilities using BSL-3 practices:\n\n\n    <ol class=\"lower-alpha\">\n\n\n      <li>Aliquoting and\/or diluting specimens.\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n      <li>Performing diagnostic tests that don&#8217;t involve amplifying the agent in vitro or in vivo. These may include IFA, DFA, other\n\n\n      direct microscopic tests on fixed slides and rapid molecular methods on untreated specimens.\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n      <li>Nucleic acid extraction procedures involving untreated specimens.\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n      <li>Serologic testing.<br>\n\n\n        Particular attention should be given to the following:<br>\n\n\n        Manipulations should be carried out in a certified biological safety cabinet.<br>\n\n\n        Laboratory workers should wear protective equipment, including disposable gloves, solid front gowns with cuffed sleeves, eye\n\n\n        protection and respiratory protection. Acceptable methods of respiratory protection include N-95 or N-100 respirators; or powered\n\n\n        air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) equipped with N-95 or high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters. Personnel who cannot wear\n\n\n        N-95 respirators because of facial hair or other fit-limitations should wear PAPRs.<br>\n\n\n        Centrifugation should be carried out using sealed centrifuge cups or rotors that are loaded and unloaded in a biological safety\n\n\n        cabinet.\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n    <\/ol>\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>The following activities require BSL-3 facilities and work practices:\n\n\n    <ol class=\"lower-alpha\">\n\n\n      <li>Culture-based attempts to isolate the agent, including inoculation onto cell culture, bacteriological or mycological media, and\n\n\n      eggs.\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n      <li>Initial characterization of agents recovered in cultures of SARS specimens.\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n    <\/ol>\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>The following activities require Animal BSL-3 facilities and work practices:\n\n\n    <ol class=\"lower-alpha\">\n\n\n      <li>Inoculation of animals for potential recovery of the agent from SARS samples.\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n      <li>Protocols involving animal inoculation for characterization of putative SARS agents.\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n    <\/ol>\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  Packaging, shipping and transport of specimens from suspect and probable SARS cases must follow:\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n  <li>the current edition of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iata.org\/dangerousgoods\/index\">http:\/\/www.iata.org\/dangerousgoods\/index<\/a>\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>and US DOT 49 CFR Parts 171-180 &#8211; http:\/\/hazmat.dot.gov\/rules.htm\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>step-by-step instructions on appropriate packaging and labelling can be viewed at the following CDC website:\n\n\n  http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncidod\/sars\/pdf\/packingspecimens-sars.pdf\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/acrobat\/readstep2.html\"><\/a> Some of the files offered on this page are in Adobe Acrobat (PDF)\n\n\n  format which requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.
