These specimens will be discarded.<\/em><\/strong>\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>\n\n\n    <strong>ONLY<\/strong> specimens to be submitted to the DPHL for influenza testing are those meeting the following criteria:\n\n\n    <ul>\n\n\n      <li>Hospitalized patients with screen positive or culture-confirmed results, including ante mortem specimens from patients who have\n\n\n      died from influenza-like illness\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n      <li>Hospitalized patients for whom influenza infection is clinically suspected despite a negative result on a rapid influenza\n\n\n      diagnostic test.\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n      <li>Patients presenting to healthcare providers participating in the US Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance Network\n\n\n      (ILINet) who meet the surveillance case definition of influenza-like illness. Influenza-like Illness is defined as fever (temperature\n\n\n      of 100\u00b0F [37.8\u00b0C] or greater) and a cough and\/or a sore throat in the absence of a KNOWN cause other than influenza.\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n    <\/ul>\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>The <strong>primary<\/strong> purpose of submitting a specimen to the Division of Public Health Laboratory per the above criteria is\n\n\n  for <strong>disease surveillance<\/strong>. Indications for testing for <strong>clinical<\/strong> purposes have been published by the\n\n\n  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/h1n1flu\/guidance\/diagnostic_tests.htm\">Interim Recommendations\n\n\n  for Clinical Use of Influenza Diagnostic Tests During the 2009-10 Influenza Season<\/a>).
