All these cases were among travelers to Haiti. As Delawareans too may travel to Haiti \u2013 or other cholera-affected areas &#8211;\n\n\n  the possibility of cholera should be considered when patients present with symptoms consistent with the disease.\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<h4>\n\n\n  Symptoms\n\n\n<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  Clinicians should inquire about travel when evaluating patients with diarrhea.\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  Cholera infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe. Approximately one in 20 (5 percent) infected persons\n\n\n  will have severe disease characterized by:\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n  <li>profuse watery diarrhea,\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>vomiting, and\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>leg cramps.\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  In these people, rapid loss of body fluids leads to dehydration and shock. Without treatment, death can occur within hours.\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<h4>\n\n\n  Treatment:\n\n\n<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  When there is reason to suspect cholera, rehydration should be initiated immediately, and a stool specimen collected for culture of\n\n\n  <em>Vibrio cholera<\/em>.\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  Cholera can be simply and successfully treated by immediate replacement of the fluid and salts lost through diarrhea. Patients can be\n\n\n  treated with oral rehydration solution, a prepackaged mixture of sugar and salts to be mixed with water and drunk in large amounts. This\n\n\n  solution is used throughout the world to treat diarrhea.\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n  <li>Severe cases also require intravenous fluid replacement. With prompt rehydration, fewer than 1% of cholera patients die.\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>Antibiotics shorten the course and diminish the severity of the illness, but they are not as important as receiving rehydration.\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h4>\n\n\n  To Report Cases\n\n\n<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  Medical practitioners are reminded that cholera is a notifiable disease in Delaware; cases should be reported to the DPH within 48 hours.\n\n\n  Reporting specifics and forms are available at:\u00a0 <a href=\"\/dph\/dpc\/rptdisease.html\">http:\/\/dhss.delaware.gov\/dph\/dpc\/rptdisease.html<\/a> .
