Updated recommendations on the use of antiviral medications will be published in\n\n\n  an upcoming Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), but an interim version of the recommendations is currently available on\n\n\n  CDC\u2019s website at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/professionals\/antivirals\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/professionals\/antivirals\/index.htm<\/a>. The updated guidance for health care professionals on the use of\n\n\n  rapid influenza diagnostic tests is available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/professionals\/diagnosis\/clinician_guidance_ridt.htm\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/professionals\/diagnosis\/clinician_guidance_ridt.htm<\/a>. For the most recent summary of influenza\n\n\n  activity in the United States, consult the CDC influenza surveillance report FluView at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/weekly\/fluactivitysurv.htm\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/weekly\/fluactivitysurv.htm<\/a>.\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<h4>\n\n\n  Recommendations\n\n\n<\/h4><br>\n\n\n<h5>\n\n\n  Antiviral Agents Guidance:\n\n\n<\/h5>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  The recommendations on the use of influenza antiviral agents contain information on treatment and chemoprophylaxis of influenza virus\n\n\n  infection, and also provide a summary of the effectiveness and safety of antiviral medications. Highlights incl <a class=\"anchors\" id=\"OLE_LINK5\"><\/a> <a class=\"anchors\" id=\"OLE_LINK4\"><\/a>ude recommendations for the following:\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<ol>\n\n\n  <li>early empiric antiviral treatment of suspected or confirmed influenza among people with <strong>severe, complicated, or progressive\n\n\n  illness or those hospitalized for influenza<\/strong>;\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>early empiric antiviral treatment of suspected or confirmed influenza among people at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/about\/disease\/high_risk.htm\" target=\"_blank\">higher risk<\/a> for influenza complications;\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>use of either oseltamivir or zanamivir for influenza A and B treatment or chemoprophylaxis, and recommendations <em>not<\/em> to use\n\n\n  rimantadine or amantadine as influenza antiviral medications due to high levels of resistance to these medications among circulating\n\n\n  influenza A viruses;\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>use of antiviral medications among children younger than 1 year of age;\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>use of local data on influenza virus circulation and influenza testing of respiratory specimens from patients with suspected\n\n\n  influenza, when available, to help inform clinicians about influenza circulation; and\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>consideration of antiviral treatment for any previously healthy, non high-risk symptomatic outpatient with confirmed or suspected\n\n\n  influenza, based upon clinical judgment, if treatment can be initiated within 48 hours of illness onset.\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<h5>\n\n\n  Rapid Influenza Diagnostic Tests Guidance:\n\n\n<\/h5>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  Recommendations on the use of rapid influenza diagnostic tests are available to help guide clinical decisions and to determine if\n\n\n  outbreaks of respiratory illness in closed settings are due to influenza virus infection. The guidance also provides information for\n\n\n  interpreting rapid diagnostic test results.
