The 2010 guidelines update the 2006 treatment guidelines. Please see the\n\n\nfollowing letter from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  Dear Colleague:\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  We are pleased to announce publication of <em>Sexually Transmitted Diseases Treatment Guidelines\u20142010<\/em>,\u201d\u00a0in the\n\n\n  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s (CDC) December 17, 2010 issue of <em>Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR)\n\n\n  Recommendations and Reports<\/em>. These guidelines for the treatment of patients who have sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) were\n\n\n  developed by CDC after consultation with a group of professionals knowledgeable in the field of STDs who met in Atlanta, Georgia from\n\n\n  April 18\u201330, 2009.\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  The <em>Guidelines<\/em> are based on newly available evidence and include\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n  <li>Expanded STD prevention recommendations, including HPV vaccination;\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>Revised gonorrhea treatment regimens;\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>New treatment regimens for genital warts and bacterial vaginosis;\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>The role of <em>Mycoplasma genitalium<\/em> and trichomoniasis in the evaluation of urethritis and cervicitis and treatment-related\n\n\n  implications; and\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n  <li>Revised guidance on the diagnostic evaluation and management of syphilis.\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  Over 19 million cases of STDs occur in the United States each year, with a disproportionate share among young people and racial and\n\n\n  ethnic minority populations. The estimated annual direct medical costs of treating STDs and their sequelae are $16.4 billion. Left\n\n\n  untreated, STDs can cause serious health problems ranging from infertility to increased risk of HIV infection. The 2010\n\n\n  <em>Guidelines<\/em>, which update the 2006 <em>Guidelines<\/em>, serve as a source of clinical guidance and advise health care providers\n\n\n  on the most effective treatment regimens, screening procedures, and prevention and vaccination strategies for STDs.
