SCHEDULE II LICENSES SUSPENDED<!--[END]-->\n\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<!--[type=HTMLEDIT name=\"Content\"]-->\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The Division of Public Health (DPH) is issuing this health advisory to advise health care providers that the licenses \n\n\n\n\n\nto prescribe schedule II controlled substances of New Castle County physicians Dr. B. Grossinger, Dr. S. Grossinger, \n\n\n\n\n\nand Dr. J. Brajer have been suspended for six months. For further information on the suspension by the Department of State, \n\n\n\n\n\nvisit <a href=\"http:\/\/news.delaware.gov\/2017\/01\/30\/secretary-of-state-announces-suspension-of-prescribing-privileges\">\n\n\n\n\n\nhttp:\/\/news.delaware.gov\/2017\/01\/30\/secretary-of-state-announces-suspension-of-prescribing-privileges<\/a>. The physicians \n\n\n\n\n\nmay continue to practice medicine but may not write schedule II controlled substance prescriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2>Background<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>This notice follows a previous Health Alert sent last week regarding the suspension of Sussex physician Eva C. \n\n\n\n\n\nDickinson\u2019s medical license due to alleged drug-related criminal activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>While circumstances may vary, there may be patients of either practice who wish to obtain opioids for pain management \n\n\n\n\n\nand\/or individuals addicted to opiates who are at a higher risk of drug-seeking behavior, using street drugs, and overdosing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Certain individuals with regular access to opioids \u2014 particularly if they are not well monitored by a medical practice \u2014 may \n\n\n\n\n\nbe at significantly higher risk for addiction and overdose. As many as one in four people in the U.S. who receive prescription opioids \n\n\n\n\n\nlong term for non-cancer pain in primary care settings struggle with addiction. Medical providers prescribing opioids should monitor \n\n\n\n\n\npatients closely, screen for addiction risk, and consider non-opioid medications for treatment of chronic pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2>Recommendations\/Reporting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>As the addiction epidemic continues to grow in Delaware and throughout the country, DPH is recommending that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>Medical providers and law enforcement should be especially vigilant about potential patient overdoses or those with \n\n\n\n\n\ndrug-seeking behavior<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>Prescribers should evaluate patients for substance use disorder risk as part of any regular clinical visits but \n\n\n\n\n\nespecially if they will be prescribing opioids. A sample opioid risk assessment tool can be found at the link below \n\n\n\n\n\nin the \u201cAdditional Information\u201d section.<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>If a patient appears to be at risk for substance abuse disorder, consider alternatives to opioids and\/or monitor \n\n\n\n\n\nopiod use very closely. To the extent possible, use non-opioid therapies such as:\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>Rehabilitative services and physical therapy<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>Cognitive behavior therapy and relaxation techniques<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>Exercise and strength training<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>Non-opioid medications: acetaminophen; non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); serotonin and norepinephrine \n\n\n\n\n\nreuptake inhibitors (SNRIs); tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs)<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/li><li>For further information on substance abuse disorder for community members and medical providers, visit \u201cHelp is Here\u201d at:\n\n\n\n\n\n\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.helpisherede.com\/\">www.helpisherede.com<\/a>. For a list of current locations that offer outpatient, inpatient, \n\n\n\n\n\ndetoxification, recovery support, and recovery living, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.helpisherede.com\/Resource-Guide\/Here-for-me\">\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.helpisherede.com\/Resource-Guide\/Here-for-me<\/a>.<\/li><li>To reduce \u201cdoctor-shopping\u201d and to check the patient\u2019s history for controlled substances, query the Prescription \n\n\n\n\n\nDrug Monitoring Program at <a href=\"http:\/\/dpr.delaware.gov\/boards\/controlledsubstances\/pmp\/default.shtml\">\n\n\n\n\n\nhttp:\/\/dpr.delaware.gov\/boards\/controlledsubstances\/pmp\/default.shtml<\/a>.<\/li><li>For those serving pregnant or reproductive-age women, consider also screening for alcohol abuse by using screening tools such as the \n\n\n\n\n\nT-ACE questionnaire, which can be found on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.helpisherede.com\/\">www.helpisherede.com<\/a> and via Google.<\/li><li>Patients should be reminded to avoid taking opioids with alcohol and sedatives or tranquilizers, including benzodiazepines \n\n\n\n\n\n(i.e. Xanax and Valium); muscle relaxants (i.e. Soma or Flexeril); sleeping pills or hypnotics (i.e. Ambien or Lunesta); and other \n\n\n\n\n\nprescription opioid pain relievers unless prescribed and carefully monitored by a health care provider.<\/li><li>Patients should be reminded to lock all medications up or put them out of the way of anyone, including children or pets, who might \n\n\n\n\n\ntry to consume them, whether by accident or on purpose. Patients can safely dispose of any unused medications at Delaware prescription \n\n\n\n\n\nmedication drop boxes. There are 14 permanent drop boxes at this time.
