Those \n\n\n\n\n\n\nattending the event will begin to arrive in the Philadelphia area on Friday, December 8. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGiven the very public nature of this game and the military profile of those in attendance, \n\n\n\n\n\n\nfederal, state, and local agencies are collaborating to ensure adequate safety and security \n\n\n\n\n\n\nof both those attending the game and the general public. At this time, the City of \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhiladelphia has received no information regarding threats specific to this event. The PDPH \n\n\n\n\n\n\nrecommends that health care facilities review their emergency response and disaster preparedness \n\n\n\n\n\n\nplans before this weekend because of the heightened potential for terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3>Recommendations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Specific recommendations include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0Evaluate facilities and personnel to ensure safety and security.<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0Ensure that appropriate staff understand their roles in an emergency and communications protocols.<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0Update clinical providers on biological, chemical, and radiological agents.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0Information for clinical management and protection of health care workers is available online \n\n\n\n\n\n\nat <a href=\"https:\/\/hip.phila.gov\/\">https:\/\/hip.phila.gov<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0Additional resources on these threats may be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/emergency.cdc.gov\/bioterrorism\/\">\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttp:\/\/emergency.cdc.gov\/bioterrorism\/<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/\">www.atsdr.cdc.gov<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/li><li>\u00a0Review procedures that address medical treatment of mass casualties, including crush injuries, \n\n\n\n\n\n\ndecontamination protocols, the use of personal protective equipment, and triage protocols.<\/li><li>\u00a0Review procedures that address medical treatment of blast and bombing injuries.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0Information can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/emergency.cdc.gov\/masscasualties\/blastinjuryfacts.asp\">\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttp:\/\/emergency.cdc.gov\/masscasualties\/blastinjuryfacts.asp<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>PDPH reviews data daily from multiple sources to facilitate the recognition of disease outbreaks. However, PDPH \n\n\n\n\n\n\nrelies on clinicians to report by telephone conditions that require immediate notification, including any outbreak, \n\n\n\n\n\n\nunusual presentation, or cluster of disease. Indicators of naturally-occurring outbreaks or possible biological terrorism are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0An unusual temporal or geographic clustering of illness (such as persons who attended the same public event or gathering).<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0Increase in serious lower respiratory illness with negative tests for common bacteria and viruses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0Patients presenting with clinical signs and symptoms that suggest an infectious disease outbreak (such as more \n\n\n\n\n\n\nthan two persons presenting with an unexplained febrile illness associated with sepsis, pneumonia, respiratory failure, \n\n\n\n\n\n\nor rash or a botulism-like syndrome with flaccid muscle paralysis, especially if occurring in otherwise healthy persons).<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0An unusual age distribution for common diseases (such as an increase in chickenpox-like illness in adult patients).<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0Single cases of disease due to uncommon, non-indigenous agents (such as anthrax, plague, tularemia) in patients with \n\n\n\n\n\n\nno history suggesting exposure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0Large number of cases of acute flaccid paralysis with prominent bulbar palsies, suggestive of a release of botulinum toxin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3>Reporting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Because of the size of the event, the proximity to Delaware, and the current threat climate, Delaware facilities need to \n\n\n\n\n\n\nprepare for the possibility that they may see patients from this event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Call the DPH Office of Emergency Medical Services and Preparedness to report conditions requiring immediate notification, \n\n\n\n\n\n\nor to obtain public health consultation.
