The majority of affected patients are children with \n\n\n\n\n\ncentral venous catheters or implantable medication ports in place at the time of their infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Molecular testing of clinical isolates from patients from five states suggest a common exposure. \n\n\n\n\n\nCommon products that have been identified include heparin and saline flushes, however, to date, no \n\n\n\n\n\nproducts have tested positive for <em>S. marcescens<\/em>. This investigation is ongoing and DPH \n\n\n\n\n\ncontinues to work with federal, state and local health partners to investigate these and other \n\n\n\n\n\npotential common exposures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>DPH requests that health care providers report clusters of <em>S. marcescens<\/em> bloodstream \n\n\n\n\n\ninfections occurring after April 1, 2018 as described in this Health Alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2>Background<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>In response to the current investigation and a potential association with the use of heparin and \n\n\n\n\n\nsaline flushes manufactured by BD, the company is voluntarily recalling certain lots of BD \n\n\n\n\n\nPosiFlush\u2122 Heparin Lock Flush and BD\u2122 Pre-Filled Normal Saline Flush syringes due to \n\n\n\n\n\npotential contamination with <em>S. marcescens<\/em>. Please refer to the following link for additional \n\n\n\n\n\ndetails and a list of the recalled products and lot numbers:\n\n\n\n\n\n <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bd.com\/en-us\/support\/alerts-and-notices\/medical-device-recall-for-bd-posiflush-heparin-lock-flush-syringes-and-bd-pre-filled-normal-saline-syringes\">http:\/\/www.bd.com\/en-us\/support\/alerts-and-notices\/medical-device-recall-for-bd-posiflush-heparin-lock-flush-syringes-and-bd-pre-filled-normal-saline-syringes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n<h2>Recommendations\/Reporting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>DPH requests that health care providers report <em>S. marcescens<\/em> bloodstream infections occurring \n\n\n\n\n\nafter April 1, 2018:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>Clusters (i.e., two or more cases) at a single inpatient healthcare facility since April 1, 2018, \n\n\n\n\n\nof <em>S. marcescens<\/em> bloodstream infections in patients who have central venous catheters or ports in \n\n\n\n\n\nplace, or <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>Individual cases since April 1, 2018, of <em>S. marcescens<\/em> bloodstream infections among \n\n\n\n\n\noutpatients who have central venous catheters or ports in place.<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Please report cases to the Delaware Division of Public Health by calling 302-744-4990 (24\/7) or by \n\n\n\n\n\nconfidential fax to 302-223-1540.
