Valsartan is used to treat high blood pressure \n\n\n\n\n\n\nand heart failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2><br>\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSummary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA is alerting health care providers and patients of a voluntary recall of several \n\n\n\n\n\n\ndrug products containing the active ingredient valsartan.  Valsartan is used to treat high \n\n\n\n\n\n\nblood pressure and heart failure. This recall is due to an impurity, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), \n\n\n\n\n\n\nwhich was found in the recalled products. However, not all products containing valsartan are \n\n\n\n\n\n\nbeing recalled. NDMA is classified as a probable human carcinogen (a substance that could cause \n\n\n\n\n\n\ncancer) based on results from laboratory tests. The presence of NDMA was unexpected and is \n\n\n\n\n\n\nthought to be related to changes in the way the active substance was manufactured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The companies listed below are recalling all lots of non-expired products that contain the \n\n\n\n\n\n\ningredient valsartan supplied by a third-party. Not all valsartan-containing medicines distributed \n\n\n\n\n\n\nin the United States have valsartan active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) supplied by this specific \n\n\n\n\n\n\ncompany. Discussion on how to proceed with \n\n\n\n\n\n\ntreatment in light of the recall may include switching patients to another valsartan \n\n\n\n\n\n\nproduct not affected by this recall or choosing an alternative treatment option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0Because valsartan is used in medicines to treat serious medical conditions, \n\n\n\n\n\n\nadvise patients taking the recalled valsartan-containing medicines to continue taking \n\n\n\n\n\n\ntheir medicine until they have a replacement product.<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0To determine whether a specific product has been recalled, instruct patients \n\n\n\n\n\n\nto look at the drug name and company name on the label of their prescription bottle. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf the information is not on the bottle, patients should contact the pharmacy that \n\n\n\n\n\n\ndispensed the medicine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0If a patient is taking one of the recalled medicines listed below, instruct \n\n\n\n\n\n\nthem to follow the recall instructions provided by the specific company.
