However, the Division of Public Health (DPH) is advising the medical community\n\n\n  of this event and providing information about ricin as a prudent measure.\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<h3>\n\n\n  Signs and Symptoms\n\n\n<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  Ricin is a potent cytotoxin derived from the beans of the castor plant.\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  <strong>Inhalation<\/strong>: respiratory irritation or cough and respiratory distress, followed by pulmonary edema, respiratory failure,\n\n\n  and multisystem organ failure. Weakness and influenza-like-illness of fever, myalgia, and arthralgia may be noted.\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  <strong>Ingestion<\/strong>: profuse vomiting and diarrhea, which may or may not be bloody, followed by hypovolemic shock and multisystem\n\n\n  organ failure.
