These milestones can refer\n\n\n\n\n  to your child\u2019s physical, cognitive, behavioral, emotional or social norms. Your child\u2019s development depends largely on the\n\n\n\n\n  nutritional, medical, emotional, and intellectual support of his\/her parents, family and the community. Approximately 17 % of children in\n\n\n\n\n  the United States have some form of developmental delay (e.g. Autism, Attention Deficit\/Hyperactivity Disorder). Early experiences during\n\n\n\n\n  the first 1000 days of your baby\u2019s life affect how their brain develops. As we rethink the balance between individual and shared\n\n\n\n\n  responsibility for our young children, <a href=\"dphearlychildpublic.html\">Delaware\u2019s Early Childhood Comprehensive Systems (ECCS)\n\n\n\n\n  Initiative<\/a> seeks to ensure the health and well-being of all young children\u2014especially from <a href=\"\/otsa\/epqc\/birth3\/directry.html\">birth to age three<\/a>.\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h3>\n\n\n\n\n  Why is Developmental Screening important?\n\n\n\n\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n  When a developmental delay is not recognized early, children miss a vital opportunity to maximize their brain\u2019s full\n\n\n\n\n  development.\u00a0 The brain development operates on a \u201cuse or lose it\u201d rule. Therefore, if a developmental delay is not\n\n\n\n\n  identified early the developmental delay will leave the child struggling to do normal activities that would have come much easier if\n\n\n\n\n  <a href=\"\/dph\/chs\/chscdw.html\">early intervention services<\/a> were obtained.\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h3>\n\n\n\n\n  How can I help my child\u2019s development?\n\n\n\n\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n  Communicate and connect with your child at birth. Parents and caregivers can do little things to foster their children\u2019s healthy\n\n\n\n\n  cognitive and emotional development, like talking to your child from birth, beginning to read to them at a very early age and helping\n\n\n\n\n  them play simple games. Parents play the most important role in providing the nurturing and stimulation that children require. On\n\n\n\n\n  occasion, parents also need information on resources and support to develop good parenting skills. The <a href=\"http:\/\/dethrives.com\/QT-30\"><em>QT:30 Campaign<\/em><\/a> is a resource the ECCS program has created to support parent and child play to\n\n\n\n\n  increase brain development. Ask your pediatrician about developmental screening using the <em>Parents\u2019 Evaluation of Developmental\n\n\n\n\n  Status<\/em> (PEDS) validated tool.
