Starting in 2022, the BRFS asked respondents if they had Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Only 4.2 percent of adults ages 18-44, compared to 19.4 percent among adults ages 55-64; and <strong>23.8 percent among those 65 and older<\/strong>. There is no statistically significant differences between men (15.0 percent) and women (12.8 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2>Pre-Diabetes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The survey asks about &#8220;pre-diabetes,&#8221; or borderline diabetes. In 2022, among adults who do not have diagnosed diabetes,\u00a0<strong>14.0 percent<\/strong>\u2014or more than 93,000 Delawareans\u2014reported being told they have pre-diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>People with pre-diabetes are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, but they can significantly\u00a0<strong>reduce that risk by increasing physical activity and eating a healthier diet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2>Compliance With Recommendations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The 2022 Delaware BRFS also provides information about compliance with recommendations for people with diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n <li><strong>60.6 percent<\/strong>\u00a0say they check their blood glucose (sugar) levels one or more times per day. [The recommended frequency is three times a day for most diabetic adults.]<\/li>\n\n\n\n <li><strong>95.2 percent<\/strong>\u00a0reported seeing their doctor within the past year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n <li><strong>96.5 percent<\/strong>\u00a0say they have been checked by a doctor for Hemoglobin A1-C one or more times in the past year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n <li><strong>70.8 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of people with diabetes had an eye exam in which their pupils were dilated during the past year. In addition, <strong>87.5 percent<\/strong> of people with diabetes had an eye exam in which a photo of the back of the eye is taken with a specialized camera.<\/li>\n\n\n\n <li>8.8%<b>\u00a0<\/b>of people with diabetes have had sores or irritations on their feet that took more than four weeks to heal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n <li>Half (<strong>49.0 percent<\/strong>) of all adults diagnosed with diabetes say they have taken a course or class in how to manage diabetes. <strong>28.2 percent<\/strong> of adults diagnosed with diabetes say that they have taken a course in how to manage diabetes within the past five years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2>Weight and Diabetes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"thumbnail photo of feet on a scale\" class=\"img-thumbnail img-responsive\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/dph\/img\/scale_thumbnail.gif\" style=\"float: left;\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Overweight and obesity are major contributing factors<\/strong> for developing diabetes. In Delaware,\u00a0<strong>23.9 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of adults who report being obese have been diagnosed with diabetes, compared with\u00a0<strong>5.3 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of adults who report normal weights. About\u00a0<strong>89.3 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of adults with diagnosed diabetes are either overweight or obese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Obesity among Delaware adults more than doubled from 13 percent in 1992 to\u00a0<strong>37.9 percent<\/strong>\u00a0in 2022. The prevalence of diagnosed\u00a0<strong>diabetes among Delaware adults also doubled<\/strong>\u00a0from 4.9 percent in 1991 to\u00a013.9 percent in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Demographic factors for diabetes closely parallel the factors related to overweight and obesity. However,<strong>\u00a0among people diagnosed with diabetes,\u00a040.4 percent report having a disability<\/strong>. About 22.0 percent of all adults with a disability say they have been diagnosed with diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2>Depression and Diabetes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>About 19.9 percent of Delaware&#8217;s adult population report being told they have a depressive disorder\u2014including depression, major depression, dysthymia, or minor depression. <strong>Among people diagnosed with diabetes,\u00a025.2 percent report having a depressive disorder<\/strong>.
