The update provides\u00a0recent data about the prevalence of diabetes in Delaware, its risk factors, disparities, costs, and\n\n\n  mortality.\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"text-center\">\n\n\n  <a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/dph\/pdf\/de_diabetes_burden_2014update.pdf\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cover of the Diabetes Burdenupdate report\" class=\"img-thumbnail img-responsive\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/dph\/img\/diabetesburden14.jpg\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 269px\"><\/a>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  About 9.6 percent of Delaware adults have been diagnosed with diabetes, according to Behavioral Risk Factor Survey data used in the\n\n\n  report.\u00a0 That means that nearly 68,000 Delawareans over the age of 18 currently have diabetes.\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  &#8220;Obesity is an especially strong risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes.\u00a0 In 2012, 39.1 percent of Delaware adults\n\n\n  18 and older reported being overweight, and an additional 26.9 percent had Body Mass Index (BMI) scores considered &#8220;obese.&#8221;\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n  The costs of diabetes are very high.
