What&#8217;s the Issue?\n\n\n\n\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n\n  <li>A TBI is an injury to the brain caused by an external force, such as a bump, blow or jolt to the head that disrupts the normal\n\n\n\n\n  function of the brain.\n\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n  <li>There is a risk of death or permanent disability with any TBI.\n\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n  <li>The severity of a TBI may range from mild (i.e., a brief change in mental status or consciousness) to severe (i.e., an extended\n\n\n\n\n  period of unconsciousness or amnesia after the injury). (CDC, 2013)\n\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n  <li>Approximately 1.7 million people experience a TBI in the United States each year. Of these people,\n\n\n\n\n    <ul>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>52,000 die\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>275,000 are hospitalized\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>1.365 million, nearly 80%, are treated and released from the Emergency Department.\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n    <\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n  <li>TBIs are a contributing factor in almost one-third (30.5%) of all injury-related deaths in the U.S.\n\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n  <em>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/traumaticbraininjury\/\" target=\"_blank\">CDC 2013<\/a><\/em>\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h3>\n\n\n\n\n  How Many TBI Related Deaths Occur in Delaware?\n\n\n\n\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Shake\" class=\"img-thumbnail img-responsive pull-right\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/dph\/img\/tbi_sci6.png\">\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n\n  <li>In 2010, a TBI was identified as an underlying cause of death in 116 fatalities.\n\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n  <em>Source: National Center for Health Statistics, CDC<\/em>\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h3>\n\n\n\n\n  What are the Leading Causes of TBIs?\n\n\n\n\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n\n  <li>\n\n\n\n\n    <strong>Falls<\/strong>\n\n\n\n\n    <ul>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>Falls are the leading cause of TBIs in the U.S. (35.2%)\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>50% of TBIs among children age 0 to 14 years are caused by falls.\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>61% of TBIs among adults age 65 years and older are the result of falls.\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n    <\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n  <li>\n\n\n\n\n    <strong>Motor vehicle-traffic crashes<\/strong>\n\n\n\n\n    <ul>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>Motor vehicle-traffic crashes are the second leading cause of TBIs in the U.S. (17.3%)\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>Among all age groups, motor vehicle and traffic related crashes result in the largest percentage of TBI-related deaths (31.8%).\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n    <\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n  <li>\n\n\n\n\n    <strong>Violence (assault, struck by\/against event)<\/strong>\n\n\n\n\n    <ul>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>Assaults account for 10% of TBIs in the U.S.\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>Struck by\/against events (including collisions with a moving or stationary object) are the second leading cause of TBIs among\n\n\n\n\n      children aged 0 to 14 years (25%).\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n    <\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n  <em>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/traumaticbraininjury\/pdf\/blue_book.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">CDC 2010<\/a><\/em>\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h3>\n\n\n\n\n  What are the Symptoms of a TBI?\n\n\n\n\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Blurred Vision\" class=\"img-thumbnail img-responsive pull-right\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/dph\/img\/tbi_sci3.png\">\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n  The most common symptoms of a TBI are categorized into four areas (PETS):\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n  The symptoms of a TBI may not appear immediately following the injury. It may be days or weeks before the symptoms become evident.\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n\n  <li>\n\n\n\n\n    <strong>Physical<\/strong>\n\n\n\n\n    <ul>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>Persistent headaches or neck pain\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>Nausea or vomiting\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>Increased sensitivity to noise or light\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>Blurred vision\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>Lightheadedness, dizziness, or loss of balance\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>Feeling tired all of the time\n\n\n\n\n <li>Difficulty sleeping\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n    <\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n<h3>\n\n\n\n\n  Who is Most at Risk for a TBI?\n\n\n\n\n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n\n  <li>Anybody can suffer a TBI.\n\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n  <li>Among all age groups, males are more at risk for a TBI than females.\n\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n  <li>TBIs are most commonly sustained by three age groups\n\n\n\n\n    <ul>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>Children between the ages of 0 and 4\n\n\n\n\n        <ul>\n\n\n\n\n          <li>Males between 0 and 4 years of age have the highest rates of TBI-related Emergency Department visits, hospitalizations, and\n\n\n\n\n          deaths combined\n\n\n\n\n          <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n        <\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n      <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n      <li>Older
