for WNV and EEE by IgM Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA). Chickens will produce antibodies to the arboviruses without presenting illness and are therefore a good marker of arboviral activities in areas of high mosquito prevalence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n <li>DPHL can refer other arboviral testing to the CDC, Fort Collins, CO laboratory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2>Submitting a Specimen<\/h2><ul>\n\n\n\n <li><strong>Zika<\/strong> specimens must have prior approval through the Division of Public Health&#8217;s <strong>Office of Infectious Disease Epidemiology (OIDE)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n <li>Human WNV specimens can be directly submitted to <strong>DPHL<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n <li>Sentinel chickens are collected via the Division of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) Mosquito Control Section.<\/li>\n\n\n\n <li>Expired bird specimens must go through the <strong>Delaware Department of Agriculture (DDA)<\/strong> to have the organs removed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2>What can you do to prevent arboviral infection?<\/h2><ul>\n\n\n\n <li>Use insect repellents containing DEET to prevent mosquito bites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n <li>Wear long sleeved shirt and pants while outdoors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n <li>Discard any items in your yard that can hold water, a breeding ground for mosquitoes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n <li>If you are pregnant, avoid travel to Zika virus endemic areas. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/zika\/areasatrisk.html\"> <b>Risk areas are highlighted here.<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n <li>Use window\/door screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2>Links:<\/h2><p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnrec.delaware.gov\/fish-wildlife\/mosquito-control\/\">DNREC Mosquito Control<\/a><\/p><p><a href=\"\/dph\/epi\/epi.html\">Office of Infectious Disease Epidemiology<\/a><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncezid\/dvbd\/index.html\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
