Influenza A Viruses are categorized by their surface proteins:  Hemagglutinin (H) and Neuraminidase (N).  Since Influenza B viruses are structurally different, they are only broken down into two lineages:  B\/Yamagata and B\/Victoria (CDC, 2017).  \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\nThe Delaware Public Health Lab performs influenza identification, molecular detection, and subtyping. Influenza surveillance is performed as part of the CDC-World Health Organization (WHO) Influenza surveillance effort. This information, along with a select number of isolates, is provided to CDC and the WHO to aid in surveillance efforts and future vaccine formulation.   \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>\n\n\n\n  <br>\n\n\n\n  What We Do\n\n\n\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n<li>Real-Time Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (rRT-PCR)\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Influenza SARS-CoV-2 (Flu SC2) Multiplex rRT-PCR\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Influenza A subtyping by rRT-PCR\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Influenza B genotyping\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n\n\n\nSeasonal H3N2 detection\n\n\n\n\u00a0 <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2009\/H1N1 Pandemic detection\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>H5N1 Avian (presumptive result)\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>H3N2 variant (presumptive result)\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>H7N9 (presumptive result)\n\n\n\n  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> Pyrosequencing \u2013 for anti-viral resistance on a subset of A\/H3N2 and pandemic A\/H1N1 influenza specimens\n\n\n\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> Respiratory Virus Panel (RVP) \u2013 For outbreaks, fatalities, or specimens (with prior approval from the Office of Infectious Disease Epidemiology\n\n\n\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>\n\n\n\n  Acceptable Specimens\n\n\n\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n<li> Nasopharyngeal washes, nasopharyngeal aspirates, nasopharyngeal swabs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> nasal or throat swabs, dual throat\/nasal swabs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> bronchial washes, bronchoalveolar lavage<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li> lung tissue (this includes lung biopsy, bronchial biopsy, and postmortem lung specimens)<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li> sputum<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li> viral culture isolates<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/dph\/pdf\/herpes.viral.flu.pertussis_collection_kit.pdf\"><b>Collection Kit here: HerpesViralFluPertussis Collection kit-Instructions<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>\n\n\n\n  Submitting a Specimen\n\n\n\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n\n\n\n<li>Obtain collection kits from the DPHL.
