Adopt-a-Resident

During the holidays, Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill (DHCI) depends on the kindness of community members. This includes neighbors, local businesses, community organizations, and volunteers all working together to fulfill the wishes of our residents. The facility asks the community to support by "adopting" residents, especially those with limited family support or by offering other types of donations.

Here is how you can help:

  • Adopt an Individual Resident: Donors can choose to purchase one or more items on a resident's wish list, ideally spending no more than $25.00. Please deliver the gift(s), unwrapped and placed in a gift bag to either the volunteer office or switchboard reception area of the resident's facility.
  • Make a Donation - One Time or Ongoing: Donors can select and purchase items from a list of suggested gifts. These gifts go into bags for residents who have not been adopted. Please drop off your donations at our facility. Note: Any remaining items will be used year-round for resident birthday bags and to meet special requests.
  • Make a Monetary Donation: Donors can send a gift card or a check (written out to "DHCI") to the facility's volunteer office. This allows the nursing home staff to handle the holiday shopping on your behalf.
  • For Contact Information: Please refer to the Delaware Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities (DSAAPD) contact information page for DHCI location and mailing address.
  • Labling Gifts: If donating gifts for individual residents, ensure they are clearly labeled.
  • Deadline for Donations: The DHCI staff kindly ask that all donations be made by early December to allow ample time for processing.
  • To Participate: Please reach out to Tina Wagner, our Volunteer Coordinator at Tina.Wagner@delaware.gov or 302-223-1011.
