What is HIPAA Security?

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Security Rules are Federal rules that specify a series of administrative, technical, and physical safeguards with organizational and documentation requirements for covered entities to use to assure the availability, confidentiality, and integrity of electronic protect health information.

What is PHI?

Protected Health Information (PHI). Individually identifiable health information that is maintained or transmitted in any form or medium. Protected health information excludes individually identifiable health information in education records covered by the Family Educational Right and Privacy Act (FERPA).


What is HIPAA Privacy?

Privacy rule. The Federal privacy regulations promulgated under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 that created national standards to protect medical records and other protected health information.


HIPAA for Researchers

Research organizations and researchers may or may not be covered by the HIPAA Privacy Rule. This informational website from the US Department of Health and Social Services, National Institutes of Health provides information on the Privacy Rule for the research community.
