Epidemiologic surveillance is the ongoing, systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data. Health data are used to detect outbreaks, target public health prevention programs, and set priorities in disease research and medical training. Accurate disease reporting is fundamental to surveillance and data interpretation.
The picture shown on the right is the Broad Street Pump in London. This pump was found to be the cause of a cholera outbreak in 1854 by Dr. John Snow who was a pioneer English epidemiologist.
