Healthy Homes Renovations - Make sure your home is a healthy one.

What is the concern?

Renovating and remodeling projects can raise concerns about health and safety. From the chemicals in various products to the dust created, caution should be used to make sure everyone in the home stays healthy and safe. Even bringing something as simple as plywood or new furniture can expose people in the home to chemicals such as formaldehyde [ Text ].

What you can do...

Educate yourself about the materials to be used as part of any renovating or remodeling project.
Try to use low volatile organic compound (VOC) and low odor products when available.
- Paints and adhesives are now more commonly available in low odor or low VOC formulas. These products can accomplish the job at hand and reduce exposure to chemicals.
- Have carpet aired out before it is installed to reduce odors during and after installation.
If using a contractor, make sure they are aware of your concerns.
Ask for Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for products to be used in the home.
- MSDS's contain information about the specific chemicals in a product, health effects and precautions that need to be taken.
