Healthy Workplaces - Employers - Auto Repair

Employees in auto repair and body shops are at risk for exposure to many chemicals and situations that can cause health problems, including cancer. Hazards can include:

  • Exposure to exhaust, fuels and chemicals associated with auto repair and maintenance
  • Exposure to vehicle exhaust
  • Working with paints, finishes and solvents
  • Working with and around heavy equipment and machinery
  • Physical hazards of working around vehicles

Education:

  • Provide training that helps employees avoid accidents and injuries.
  • Ensure that MSDS sheets for products used in your business are accessible and reviewed by employees.

Awareness:

  • Maintain tools and equipment and inspect before each use.
  • Encourage workers to be aware and report unsafe conditions and actions.

Prevention:

  • Provide personal protective equipment and training on its use.
  • Ensure that ventilation equipment is used to remove exhaust, chemical vapors and dust from the workspace.
  • Using environmentally friendly products can reduce your businesses impact on the environment and your employee's health.
