Healthcare providers are advised of the availability of 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone-Caproate injections for pregnant women with a history of previous premature birth. 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone has been proven to reduce recurrent premature birth in women who have previously delivered a premature infant. These injections should begin between 16 and 20 weeks gestation and continue until delivery or 36 weeks gestation. This drug has been made available through funding from the Delaware Healthy Mother and Infant Consortium (DHMIC) in order to increase access to this medication for low income women.
Healthcare providers may obtain 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone for their patients through the Prematurity Prevention Program at Christiana Care Health Systems under the direction of Dr. Matthew Hoffman. This program will provide the drug to your office free of charge within two business days of a telephone request. The weekly administration of the drug will occur in your office or through visiting nurse visits.
For information concerning the availability of this drug, or questions about its use, healthcare providers please contact the Prematurity Prevention Program at (302) 733-3977.
