What are the dangers?
Smoking and other tobacco use cause a variety of cancers and other health problems that are in large part preventable and quickly becoming one of Delaware’s biggest public health concerns.
There are more than 4,000 chemicals in the smoke that comes from smokers. This smoke is inhaled by those around them and is known as second-hand tobacco smoke. Children exposed to secondhand smoke are at an increased risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), acute respiratory infections, ear problems, and more severe asthma. Smoking by parents causes respiratory symptoms and slows lung growth in their children.
What you can do…
- If you smoke, get help to quit.
- Ask those who smoke to take it outside.
- Do not allow smoking in your home or car.
- Insist that childcare workers not smoke around your children.
If you have concerns about smoking in restaurants or other public places, please contact the Clean Indoor Air Act Program.
